Where Am I after getting tested?

So whats next for me after being diagnosed with HIV? Its been a week since I found out I was positive. Its a good thing I think that im asymptomatic.

Asymptomatic HIV infection is phase in which the immune system in someone with HIV slowly deteriorates, but the person has no symptoms. How long this phase lasts depends on how quickly the HIV virus copies itself, and how the person's genes affects the way the body handles the virus.

Aside from the skin rash. I feel okay. Although from 64 kilos im now down to 50 and going down every single month. I can't imagine how skinny I am now. Its like im in highschool again.

Dec 20 will be my schedule for my CD4 test. Since CD4 here in Cebu is very limited. It comes in schedule. Unless you want to pay around 10k for the cd4 alone in Chong Hua Hospital.

I'll be going home for Christmas and I am planning to tell my friends back home to have more support group. I still don't know how they would react to it though. But again, I have to do this.

I can't imagine how God sustained me the entire week. Yes there were countless cries, numerous whys, but i just have to stand firm with my FAITH in Him. I still think about it everyday. Almost every minute actually. But i keep on reminding myself that there is more to life than HIV. I won't let this ruin my life.

Like you, i also have a lot of plans. To travel, to have a stable business, to inspire others. A lot of each. And thinking how HIV work sometimes is not helping. I dont want to wake up one day with all the sickness again.

What kept me well and healthy is my relationship with God. At the time that my thoughts were already filled with possiblities of me having HIV, was the time i offered everything to God. It was the time that I had my most intimate moments with Him. Yes, living a Christian life with HIV is full of persecutions. But i always claim to this verse :

If being sick would bring Him more glory. Then God's will be done.

I am still not okay. No matter how I try to forget things, its still not okay. But rather than dwell on those things. Id rather do more productive by reaching out to others who have the same problem as mine.

8 Myths about HIV / Aids by Mario Dre

It seems a bit shocking that there are still a lot of people who are woefully uninformed about AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), and still spout ridiculous nonsense that ironically puts more people at risk, instead of protecting them. With the rising number of people with HIV in the Philippines, we can never be too careful.

To this day, there is still no known cure for HIV or AIDS, yet if Magic Johnson is any indication, you can live a relatively normal life thanks to today’s medical advancements. Still, when the career of one of the greatest NBA players of all time was cut short because other players were afraid he’d bleed all over them and transmit HIV, you know that there’s a lot of room for improvement when it comes to awareness about the nature of HIV and AIDS.

Up to now, people still mistakenly believe that…

While it is possible to catch HIV throughextremely torrid kissing you need to meet so many conditions first that it is considered low-risk at worst. Regardless of the presence of mouth sores, saliva is a very poor carrier for HIV, so unless you’re both bleeding from the mouth when you start making out, you need not worry about it.

As for toilets or mosquito bites, well, both are simply impossible. The truth is, there are very specific means for HIV to be transmitted, and all these three aren’t among them.

While there is still no known cure for HIV or AIDS, medical advances have made it possible for people to live a mostly normal life with the disease becoming almost merely an afterthought. Long before these antiretroviral drugs came along, though, it already took nine to 11 years before one would succumb to the disease, so it wasn’t exactly instantaneous, either.

Remember: Magic Johnson was diagnosed with HIV in 1991. It has been 22 years and he is still very much alive and kicking.

One of the easiest ways to transmit HIV is through unprotected sex. Statistically, due to the lack of risk of pregnancy, gay people are more likely to engage in intercourse sans condoms. This does not mean, though, that heterosexual people are risk-free: anyone can get AIDS from anyone through unprotected sex.

Again, HIV is normally acquired throughtransmission of bodily fluids. Oral sex normally involves that, although the risk is notably lower than intercourse. (Ironically, letting the fluids stay in your mouth while you make up your mind if you will spit or swallow is riskier for acquiring HIV than actually doing either immediately. Spit or swallow: don’t let it wallow.)

As counterintuitive as it may sound, two HIV-positive people can still infect each other further with more drug-resistant strains of the virus: a superinfection, if you will. Remember all those expensive antiretroviral meds you need to take to prevent your HIV from becoming AIDS? You might find them completely useless by the time you get superinfected.

While yes, this is likely, this is not a statistical certainty. There is always a chance that the mother will not pass HIV to their child, especially if they take medication and do not breastfeed upon childbirth.

Sorry, nope. If you are HIV-positive, you, more than anyone else, should be practicing safe sex.

This myth that was promulgated in Africa, the continent with the most number of people infected by the virus, partly due to the Catholic Church’s standon condoms. This kind of misinformationis precisely why AIDS continues to be a problem worldwide.

Getting tested for HIV

If you checked my previous post. You can check clinics or hospitals where you can be tested. Some might not be updated for phone numbers. If you are in Cebu you can email me and I can provide you with much detailed instructions.

It was after a church service when I realized that I had to be tested. I found everything online. From what clinic to go to, who to see, and stuff. I researched for almost a week to know more about how to get tested. God has been amazing with all the things he did during my journey when I was about to be tested.

I first went to Social Hygenic Clinic here in cebu. I thought it was like a private hub where you can be tested discreetly but when i got there. I realized it was a City Health Office. I was overwhelmed by so many people. I have never been to any city health clinic before. And the thought of being there CHANGED me. It was a humbling experience since i was able to realize how blessed I am despite of everything. I saw a lot of elderly people merely depending their medecines from the Government. It was heart breaking. As i wander the place. In one corner of the building (right side) i found Std, aids and hiv posters outside one room. My heart started to beat very fast. I was so conscious that someone might recognize me. I sat outside the room for 15 minutes to observe what was happening. I was about it give up already. I was scared as hell. After a few minutes. For some reason, I found the courage to go in. As I entered the door, more people are actually waiting inside. All of them looked at me as I open the door. I was so  embarrased. I just don't know what to do. People waiting inside seemed to be sex workers waiting to be tested i think. (Sorry if you find the term offensive) i find myself inside trying to find a person to ask on how to get tested. I found no one. I was already shaking. Literally. I walked out not knowing where to go next. I was about to give up already. I was almost crying. I prayed. Asking God to be with me and guide me. I have reached this far. No time to turn back. A few minutes later. I decided to go to Vicentte Sotto Hospital. I reached my phone and started to search again. When I got there, I dont know where to go, Who to ask, or What to do. I was clueless with everything around me. I was still shaking. Trying to calm myself down. I walked along the hallways of the hospital. I even transfered to a nearby hospital in Chong Hua coz I was literally going blank with what to do. As i was about to give up. God revealed to me a name in some website i ran into before in Vicentte Sotto. So I went back and tried to look for that doctor. I was pointed from one direction to another. After nearly 2 hours. I found the doctor. (I forgot her name)

We were in a room where there are a few people inside. I dont know what to ask her, and i can clearly remember the words that came out that day "hi! I saw your name online, i was wondering if you can help me" i know it was really awkward. But i just had to do it. Thank God she understood what i meant even before i finish my sentence. She then told me that she is no longer incharge of assisting hiv testing and she handed me over a piece of paper and asked me to go the Laboratory section in the Pathology dept. I followed her as instructed. When i was there i was able to catch up with the doctor who was literally about to leave for a convention. Sigh of relief was all over me. He turned me over to Dr Michael Son who accomodated me very nicely.

He gave me an overview about whats going to happen. There was counselling, interviews and some documents needed to be signed. As i give him the signed documents back. He asked me if im from **** i said yes. Surprisingly. We live in the same building. Hahaha. After the counselling, i got my blood sample. He then asked me to return after 2 weeks which i did. And he then told me again to go back after another 2 weeks since the initial result came out positive and that it needed to be sent to manila for confirmatory. The researched i made during the past months really paid off i was able to know more about HIV. I was already fully aware that my elisa test turned out positive since they needed the western blot test for confirmation. But just Fyi, some elisa test turned out to be false positive for most people as well. So the best way is to wait for the confirmatory results. Well for mine, we all know its positive.

The experience in getting tested was tough. Yet it was an eye opener for me. That God is in control no matter what. That His timing is very perfect. Had i been a minute early or late in any of the events above, the end result may not be as satisfying as it did. Just as i was about to give up. New revelations always come up. Its just amazing how he responds to every plea. I know I was with God during that time. It was courage that got me through.

Here are my own tips if you plan to get tested:
- research. Know where to go. What to ask. Who to look for.
- set alternatives. Incase one hospital/clinic would not work for you
- take down notes. You might forget directions or doctors name as you go. So its helpful if you write them down.
- pray and be patient. Hospitals caters a lot of people. Try to reflect while waiting.
- bring extra cash. Its handy esp if youre going from one clinic to another.

If you have questions you can message me at iamlivingbyfaith2013@yahoo.com.ph i can also give you a call if you need someone to talk to about hiv. We are in this together. God Loves You. :)
